Christian Relationship Advice – How to Communicate Better

No matter if you have a great relationship or if you are experiencing marriage problems, learning how to improve your communication skills is probably the best Christian relationship advice you can get. By communicating better with eachother you can strenghten the relationship.

You may think that communicating with someone is easy, but there are many ways things can be said. When you are feeling happy and very much in love with your partner, choosing the right words is easy. However, if you are angry, hurt or under criticism it is no longer so easy to communicate effectively.

The way you are able to communicate in situations where you are feeling angry, hurt or criticized is the key to building a relationship with love, intimacy and friendship. Good communication includes being good at expressing your own opinions and emotions as well as being a good listener. Tell your partner about your feelings and try to understand how he/she is feeling.

Christian relationship advice to improve your communication

1. Empathy

Try to understand your partner’s feelings by putting yourself in your partner’s shoes. Don’t get defensive, but be interested in what he/she has to say. Ask questions to learn more about how your partner is feeling.

2. Express your emotions

Pay attention to your own feelings and communicate them clearly. Don’t try to deny how you feel. Allow yourself to feel what you feel.

3. Don’t blame/criticize

Tell your partner about your feelings without blaming him/her or yourself. To avoid criticizing your partner, it’s a good idea to use expression such as «I feel sad» rather than «You are making me feel sad».

To learn the above communication techniques takes time. Arguing about whose opinion is right never solved any problems. Don’t try to make your partner agree with you through arguments. Realize that there are two truths, yours and his/hers. When you are willing to listen to your partner’s view, he/she will be more willing to listen to your point of view as well. By respecting eachother and trying to understand how your partner feels, it is much more likely that you will be able to solve a conflict in your relationship.
